Overseas coaches to attend girls’ BBFS camp

Cal Blankendal, of the BBFS

Bermuda’s Brazilian Football School will hold their first All Girls Student-Athlete Academy Training Camp next month.

The weeklong development camp, which offers coaching in field hockey and football, is scheduled for February 11 to 15.

One session will cater for girls aged 9 to 13 and the other for those aged 14 and older.

Cal Blankendal, who formed the BBFS more than a decade ago, said he was also looking to add basketball to the camp.

“The five-day camp will provide our female athletes with an on-island, affordable opportunity to showcase their potential to a group of high qualified and experienced coaches,” he said. “Our student-athletes will have realistic opportunities to receive overseas training, trials and academic bursaries.

“The camp will feature coaches from the United States and Canada who are staff coaches at boarding schools, colleges and external-based academies. Thus far, the incoming coaches have networks in Canada, US and England and are eager to recruit players for their academic institutions.

“During the past eight months we have secured and or aided in eight student-athletes receiving international bursaries, two international semi-professional contracts and one youth academy club contract in the US, Canada and Holland.”

The younger girls will be involved in the camp from 9am to 3pm, while the older girls will participate from 9am to noon.

“We wish to encourage each school, club and or parents to register their outstanding athletes,” Blankendal said.
