Tovey returns to the stage

Big goals: Nicole Tovey will compete in the bikini class at the Arnold Classic in Columbus, Ohio, on Saturday

Nicole Tovey will return to the stage for the first time in 12 months when she competes at the prestigious Arnold Classic in Columbus, Ohio, on Saturday.

After a gruelling run of 16 shows in three years, Tovey felt in need of a lengthy break and has spent the past year focusing on her training without the pressures of competition.

Tovey, who won the masters title in the bikini class at the Arnolds last year, said she has benefited from some reflection time and a renewed enthusiasm and excitement for the sport.

“I’ve kept a pretty low profile the last year or so,” said Tovey, a lawyer at Taylors in association with Walkers.

“Competing in 16 shows in three years is tremendously hard on the body. I decided to take a break mentally and physically to recover and take some time to improve my physique.

“It’s been a year since I stepped on stage, so I’m hoping the hard work I’ve put in during the time off will yield results this year.

“I’m feeling good going into this competition. The break has made this prep period much easier and more enjoyable.”

Tovey’s determination to achieve her ultimate goal of landing a pro card remains undiminished and has vowed to “fight” for a top finish in Columbus.

“I’m confident I’ve done my part and shown up for the things I have control over — putting in the work at the gym, following my meal plan and improving on my physique and presentation.

“You’re only as good as the person standing next to you and you never know who is going to show up on the day,” said Tovey, who finished fourth and sixth in her respective classes in her previous outing at the 2 Bros Pro in London.

“The judges will have their preference, so it all comes down to whether my look is what they like. It’s up to me to give my best showing and fight for it.

“As always, the goal is overall and a pro card. Only the overall winner will earn pro status [at the Arnolds].”

Tovey is somewhat of a veteran when it comes to Arnold competitions. She has graced the stage at events in her native Australia, Spain and South Africa, although she still considers the Columbus competition as the blue-ribbon show.

“Columbus, I believe, is where it all began and definitely the biggest, with more competitors, an incredibly high standard of competition, a huge expo loaded with great vendors and sporting products and services.

“There are multiple different sports, not just bodybuilding, and it draws a huge crowd and is a prestigious pro show.

“It’s definitely the Arnolds to be at.”
