Women drivers in dominant form

War Machine

A trio of women drivers achieved an extraordinary feat during the harness racing action at Vesey Street at the weekend.Kayla Caldwell, Candyce Martins and Andrea Westerfield produced the three fastest times during the race schedule competing in the Free for All division featuring the island’s fastest ponies.Caldwell, Mount Saint Agnes school pupil, achieved the fastest time of 1:02/4 with former track and gelding record holder War Machine. The time also equalled the season’s second fastest time which War Machine now shares with Simsfield Hardtimes.“It was a good performance and my daughter Kayla is getting used to him,” said Colin Mello, Caldwell’s father and War Machine’s joint owner. “She’s never raced in the Free for All until this year.“In the Free for All everything is lot of faster, but she is doing really good and I’m really proud of her.”War Machine’s time was just three fifths of a second shy of the season’s fastest time of 1:02/1 achieved by Charles Whited’s gelding, Gold N Glory, last month.Westerfield set the third fastest time of 1:03/1 competing with Andy Stoneham’s stallion, Custard the Dragon.Simsfield Hardtimes, Gold N Glory and Pocket De Gold were the remaining ponies producing sub-1:04 times.Gold Legacy and Somegoldsomwhere were the only multiple heat winners. Meanwhile, a new champion will be crowned at the upcoming festive stakes races as reigning champion War Machine will not be returning to defend his title.Owners G & S Mello have opted to skip the stakes races on Boxing Day and New Year’s Day to allow driver Caldwell more time to gel with the horse.“We are going to skip the stakes and just going to be in the regular races,” said Mello, who is also the Driving Horse and Pony Club president. “Kayla wants to get to know him [War Machine] a little better and we don’t want to put no pressure on her. It’s what she wanted to do so we have to let her get her confidence with the horse.”Harness racing continues on Saturday at 6pm.
