A former police officer who admitted drug charges was sentenced to 18 months of probation yesterday, including a requirement that he receives treatment.

Che Young, 38, from St George’s, admitted two counts of soliciting others to supply cocaine or heroin, along with three charges that he used a police computer to access data without authorisation in 2024.

A police spokesman confirmed in March 2025, at the time of his first appearance in court, that he was no longer employed by the Bermuda Police Service.

During a sentencing hearing, Khadija Beddeau, for the Crown, said that reports had indicated a need for drug treatment services.

In the circumstances, she suggested that Young be sentenced to probation with a condition being that he must complete any recommended treatment programmes.

While Bruce Swan, counsel for Young, suggested that a conditional discharge might be appropriate, magistrate Auralee Cassidy said the defendant’s actions constituted a “breach of trust that the court could not be blind to”.

She added: “As a police officer, he has misused a police computer not once, not twice but three times for his own benefit.”

Ms Cassidy said the offences were capable of earning Young time behind bars, but, given his early guilty plea, the time that had passed since the offences and the reports about the defendant received by the courts, probation was appropriate.

She sentenced Young to a “global sentence” of 18 months of probation, covering all of his offences.
