Thisbabyrocks lived up to her name after blazing a new Bermuda-bred record and lifetime best at Vesey Street at the weekend.Competing in the Junior Free for All, Mello Family’s four-year-old mare ran a 1:02/3 to shave two fifths of a second off of the previous record, which stood at 1:03 flat, and was held by rival mare Reel Patrol.“I thought it was a pretty good feat,” driver Kiwon Waldron said. “We were shooting for that goal and the pony has always had it in her. She performed well and everything went well.“I think it’s looking up for the Bermuda bred side of it. Hopefully it keeps getting better and we can be as competitive with the overseas horses.”Thisbabyrocks broke the record en route to winning her opening heat racing on the rail during the race programme on Sunday.“We tried to get off to a good start and the track was in very good shape and it all worked out,” Waldron added. “No disrespect to the other ponies, but she was just a bad pony on that day.“From start to finish she was all game. She wanted to go so off she went.”For Waldron, it was a case of lightening striking twice as he was also at the helm of Reel Patrol, owned by Inwood Stables, when she set the previous record last February.“I thought it was pretty good to break the record with two good ponies that had shots at it to do it,” the 19-year-old said. “Shout out to the owners and the ponies really, they did all the work. “Thanks to all the connections and hopefully we can have a good end to the season.”Asked whether he believes Mello’s mare can go any faster, Waldron added: “If the conditions are right, she’s right and I drive her correctly you never know. She just might lower her mark.”Thisbabyrocks was among a trio of ponies that posted a 1:02/3 on the day which also included Raynor Family’s four-year- old stallion, Special Gold, and Robert and Tyler Lopes’s mare, Google Me, the overall track record holder (1:01/1).Simsfield Hardtimes posted the fastest time at the weekend of 1:02/1 in route to a heat victory competing in the Free for All.Gold N Glory, owned by Charles Whited, posted the third fastest time of 1:02/4 competing in the same time bar.
