Daley shatters Canadian record

Golden girl: Daley, centre, at the Talisman Sport Centre

Elan Daley of Bermuda turned in some outstanding performances at the Canadian Age Group Swimming Championships at the weekend, including breaking an age group record that has stood for 25 years.

Daley, who swims for local club Sharks, achieved a record-breaking gold medal in the 12-and-under girls 50 metres freestyle when she clocked 27.07 seconds to break the previous record which was set in 1990.

She also won a gold in the 100 butterfly with a time of 1:06.91 as well as a silver in the 100 freestyle, in 1:01.24, and bronze in the 50 breaststroke with a time of 35.81 seconds.

“I feel really happy, I’m going to try to get more records,” said Daley during the four-day meet at the Talisman Sport Centre in Calgary, Alberta. “I just prepared the same way I usually do and I guess I just tried a little harder.

“My coach told me to breathe three times during the race, breathe as little as possible.”

Daley also finished sixth in the 200 free and eighth in the 100 back yesterday, but was hoping to add to her medal haul in the 200 individual medley and 50 butterfly last night.

The eleven-year-old reached the final of the 200 IM when she placed fifth in the preliminaries yesterday morning with a time of 2:38.02.

In late January, Daley, then ten years old, broke a host of records in the Best of the Best swim meet, setting new times in the girls’ 400 individual medley, the 200 breaststroke, and 50 butterfly at the Basa Pool.
