Julian Fletcher broke three of his own national records during a cluster of short-course events at the Fina/airweave World Cup.

The 26-year-old finished thirteenth in the 50 metres breaststroke at the World Cup Singapore in 28.65sec on October 21 before shaving that time down to 28.50 after placing tenth in Hong Kong last weekend.

He also set a record in the 100 breaststroke final in Hong Kong, finishing eighth in a time of 1:01.57.

Although he is thrilled to have set three national records, Fletcher believes there is plenty of room for improvement.

“My goal going into the three meets [Singapore, Tokyo and Hong Kong] was to make a final,” said Fletcher, the first Bermudian to compete at the World Cup, which includes nine events in cities such as Berlin, Dubai and Paris.

“I’m pleased with the results, with three national records, but I feel I could have improved if given the chance for a second swim in all my events.

“Being the first Bermudian to compete at the World Cup was an incredible experience, and being able to represent Bermuda in finals was special.

“National records are always a great add-on to a successful meet, but I really had expected to swim faster.”

Fletcher, who made his Olympic Games debut in Rio in the summer, finishing third in his 100 breaststroke heat, will now look ahead to the inaugural World Short-Course Championships in Windsor, Ontario, from December 6 to 11.

The Trojan Swim Club member has previously competed at the Pan Am Games in Toronto and World Championships in Kazan, Russia, last summer, as well the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow in 2014.
