Harbour finish year on high

Fastest 12-year-old in Britain: Sam Williamson

The Harbour Swim Club, with more than 160 active members, continue their resurgence as a major player in Bermuda swimming.

At their recent Club Championships, Harbour turned out in force with over 120 swimmers.

A plethora of personal-best times were set, with Shona Palmer, the club’s head coach, saying: “The Club Championships have been an outstanding way to end the first part of our race season.

“The swimmers have delivered some strong results prior to Christmas and, with hard work over the Christmas period, 2017 promises to be a great year for Harbour Swimmers’

Stephen Castree, the club president, added: “Our commitment to building a larger pool of junior swimmers by offering training seven days a week is translating into some outstanding junior and senior swims, and, as the juniors move through the senior ranks, we anticipate our numbers increasing further.

“With local and overseas national records held by club members, we are looking forward to a bright future for Harbour.”

As well as all club members participating in cross-section races, the meet also offered the opportunity for the youngest to experience racing for the first time in a kicking race and afforded those non-Harbour members to participate for record setting of qualification purposes.

Sam Williamson, of the Sharks Swim Club, coached by Ben Smith, took full advantage. Williamson posted a time of 33.03sec in the boys’ 50-metres breaststroke in the morning, dropping to a time of 32.84 seconds in the evening.

This made Williamson the fastest ever 12-year-old in Britain as at December 31, smashing the previous record of 33.24 seconds set in 2001.

The club go into their Christmas period with training continuing and a good mix of swimming, land work, beach work and some inspirational presentations are prepared for the festive period.
