Smith proud as records tumble

Elan Daley was a member of the team that set a new record in the 13-14 girls’ 4x50 medley relay

Records tumbled during the final swim meet of the Best of Best Shipping Series at the Bermuda Amateur Swimming Association pool at Saltus Grammar School at the weekend.

Marleigh Howes, Elijah Daley and Taylor White each set new individual records.

Howes continued her assault on the eight-and-under records by setting new marks in the 100 and 400 freestyle, while Daley — who returned home to compete in the meet — slashed a staggering 15 seconds off of the 200 butterfly record.

White has come on in leaps and bounds in the freestyle this season and that trend continued as she set broke Elan Daley’s mark in the 800 freestyle.

If it was any consolation, Elan Daley was a member of the team that set a new record in the 13-14 girls’ 4x50 medley relay, which also included Logan Watson-Brown, Skyler Powell and Gabriela Pitman.

Ben Smith, the Bermuda swimming coach, summed up last Saturday’s swim meet as both exciting and successful.

“The final meet in the Best of Best Shipping series was a fitting conclusion to a great event,” Smith said. “Best shipping has given another great opportunity for our young people to showcase their talent.

“As the series encourages swimmers to do different events at each meet of the series so that the best overall can be crowned champion, we saw lots of strong swims.

“The personal best percentage from all the swimmers was very high, which means that the hard work put in over the winter is paying off. We had some great highlights with more records falling.”

The various age-group winners from Best of Best Shipping will be announced during the Schroders Long Course Championships held at the National Aquatics Centre at the National Stadium from April 27 through 30.
