Swimmers from the Warwick Academy programme reaped rewards for their hard work at the Launch into Long Course meet in Ontario, Canada.

The six-member team, including Jesse Washington, the multiple Carifta Championships medal-winner, won 23 medals and set as many personal-best times competing at the event at Markham Pan Am Centre last weekend.

Ben Smith, the Bermuda coach, who accompanied the team, hosted by the Richmond Hill Aquatic Club, said: “The training has led up to the results that we got at this meet, which is amazing. Everybody has been working extremely hard and we are seeing the results by the fact they are getting in the pool at every opportunity and are getting faster.”

Commonwealth Games hopeful Washington bagged two gold medals in the 15 and over men’s 100 and 50 metres freestyle, as well as silver in the 100 butterfly. Brian Desmond completed a full set after winning gold in the men’s 13-14 800 and 400 freestyle, silver in the 100 and 200 freestyle, and bronze in the 100 and 200 backstroke.

Jack Harvey won silver in the men’s 13-14 100 and 200 backstroke, 400 free, and bronze in the 50 backstroke and 200 freestyle.

Logan Watson-Brown won gold in the women’s 13-14 100 backstroke and 100 freestyle, silver in the 50 freestyle and 200 backstroke, and bronze in the 200 freestyle.

Taylor White won gold in the women’s 13-14 200 fly, silver in the 800 and 400 freestyle, and bronze in the 100 fly. Tayla Horan did not secure a podium display but was able to record-three personal bests in the 50 breaststroke, 100 backstroke and 50 freestyle.

“To be able to come back with the amount of medals and personal best times that they did is exciting,” Smith added.

“When you challenge at the level we have been working, I don’t expect anything less.”
