Arabella Newport-Derbyshire set several records in the 8 and under category at the Schroders Long Course Championships at the Aquatics Centre last weekend.

The eight-year-old established a record in the 200 metres backstroke with a time of 3min 33.81sec in the preliminaries only to break that mark in the finals with a 3:27.48.

She broke the 50 backstroke record of 45.91 with a swim of 45.08. In the 100 backstroke her time of 1:39.86 shattered the previous record of 1:46.19. In the 100 backstroke she swam 1:39:80 in the prelims and 1:38.65 in the finals, with both times breaking the 1:40.19 record. There were also two relay records established by the Harbour Swim Club in the new mixed-relay format. Flora Betts, Nathan Burrill, Broke Castree and Thomas Cechini set the record in the 4x100 free for 9-10 age group.

The team of Jared Moore, Josephine Durden, Pippa Charleson and Branon Adkins set the 11-12 age group in the 4x100 free mixed relay.

“We were pleased with the overall results of the meet where we saw most swimmers reaching personal best times,” Ben Smith, the Bermuda head coach, said.

“Several of our Carifta swimmers who are in preparation for CCCAN swam very fast and improved on their times from Carifta. Most exciting was the breakthrough of many of our young swimmers who have put themselves in position to qualify for Carifta 2019.
