Jones shines at Vermont state championships

Making a splash: Bermuda's Logan Jones, 8, has become a Vermont state champion

Bermudian Logan Jones has become the Vermont state swimming champion in the boys’ under-8 50 metres freestyle.

The eight-year-old won the event in a personal best time of 35.99sec at the recent Vermont Swim Association State Championships at the Upper Valley Aquatic Centre.

He placed second in his three other events, the 25 butterfly in 18.40, the 25 backstroke in 20.44 and second in the 100 individual medley in 1:36:62. All of his times were personal bests.

Jones, who was competing overseas for the first time, was representing the Quechee team during a three-week trip to the village in Vermont where his family have a home.

The Warwick Academy pupil helped Quechee’s 100 freestyle relay team, featuring John Fogarty, Benjamin Morse and Samuel Morse, finish sixth in a time of 1:13.49.

The Harbour Club swimmer also competed in four other meets during his stay in Quechee.

Nick Jones, a former fitness coach for the Bermuda football and cricket teams, said the club could not have made his son feel more welcome.

“The coaches and the kids from the club were great; the way they embraced him and cheered for him — it was fantastic,” he said.
