Mallory loses final in El Salvador

Trey Mallory

Trey Mallory came agonisingly close to clinching another ITF World Tennis Tour Junior doubles title, suffering defeat in the final of the J3 La Libertad event in El Salvador.Having sealed title glory at the J4 Guatemala/Copa Universidad Galileo event last month, Mallory, the island’s top-ranked junior, and his partner John Chin, of Jamaica, seeded sixth, were aiming to cause an upset against the third-seeded United States pair of Spencer Brachman and Maxwell McKennon. However, despite a spirited display, Mallory and Chin ultimately lost in straight sets, losing the first 6-4, before going down 6-3 in the second. To reach the final Mallory and his partner had to overcome fourth-seed pairing of Sam Scherer and Auma Visaya, of the US, in the opening match prevailing in a three-set thriller. Winning the first set 6-3, their opponents responded in the second 7-6, to force a deciding set, in which Mallory and Chin won 10-6 to progress to the semi-finals.There they faced the eighth-seeds, Christopher Heck, of Canada and Ty Switzer, of the US, with the match again going the distance over three sets. The opposition eased to the first set winning, 6-1, before a brilliant response resulted in Mallory and Chin take the second set by the same margin, before going on to win the final set 10-3.Mallory also competed in the singles event, where after receiving a bye in the first round he was pitted against Adam Duan, of the US, in the second. It was to prove a difficult outing for the 17-year-old with his opponent claiming a straight sets victory, winning 6-3, 6-3.His latest display, continues Mallory’s impressive recent form on the ITF World Junior Tennis Tour, which also included him reaching the quarter-finals in Queretaro Mexico, last month.
