Tariq Simons is happy to be recalled for the Davis Cup World Group II against Mexico next month.

Simons, who missed the trip to Cyprus when Bermuda defeated Georgia, will team up with Trey Mallory, Daniel Phillips, Zachary McGuire and Wayne Montgomery for the contest at WER Joell Stadium on September 19-20.

“I’m happy to have regained my level of tennis over the past six months and happier to have returned to the team scene representing the island,” Simons said.

“It’s refreshing to be back to work with the boys again. It’s properly a family type feel to it.

“I’m pretty sharp in my skill on court right now and I feel ready to play should I be called upon on the day.”

Simons is counting on home support to carry them against the 49th ranked Mexico over the two days.

“As for our competition, Mexico’s Davis Cup team, I think it’s tough for them to imagine why a nation of our size might be an issue,” the 25-year-old.

“However, I know that my team-mates and I respond especially well to Bermudian support.

“Fortunately for us, the event is on home soil. If the local crowd shows up for us on both game days, then Mexico won’t just be playing us as the tennis team, but us as a nation.”

Ricky Mallory, the team captain, believes that Simons worked hard to get back into the team.

In preparing the players for the Mexican challenge, the Bermuda Lawn Tennis Association's national tennis director conducted a camp in Florida with three of the team members.

“The Davis Cup team remains unchanged, with the addition of Tariq Simons back in the fold after rightfully earning his place through his strong performances in recent local tournaments,” Mallory said.

“I recently completed an intense training block in Miami, Florida, with three of the five players, Trey, Daniel and Tariq, which also included competitive tournament play.

“The training block was extremely productive, not only from a tennis and fitness perspective, but also because it gave me valuable additional time to understand the players' thought processes, decision-making, and why they respond to certain situations the way they do on court.

“That insight is extremely important as we continue to prepare for the Davis Cup tie. While I was off island, I had Jenson Bascome working with Wayne back home to ensure he continued to get quality training and remained on track with his preparation.

“Now that I am back on island, I will take over the sessions here at WER Joell Tennis Stadium with Wayne and Tariq.

“Trey will be flying back home next week to join the team, while Daniel is expected to return on September 12. Zach will remain at school and will return home on the weekend of the event.

“With the team coming together over the next few weeks, our focus will be on maximising every training session, fine tuning the details and making sure everyone is physically and mentally prepared to represent Bermuda at our highest level.”
