Triathlon event sparks opportunities

Champion: Flora Duffy seen winning the 2017 ITU World Triathlon Series event in Edmonton, Canada. Bermuda will host an ITU event next year and organisers are looking for local businesses to help stage it

Opportunities for small businesses and entrepreneurs are arising from Bermuda’s hosting of an international triathlon event next year.

The organisers of next April’s ITU World Triathlon Series event have released 16 request-for-proposal documents on its website today, covering areas from trucking to grandstands and racecourse entertainment.

WTSBDA Ltd is the entity managing the event, having been set up by the Bermuda Tourism Authority earlier this year.

All interested parties can review the RFPs, submit questions and tender their bids online at www.tribermuda.com/rfp .

Flora Duffy, local favourite and reigning world champion, is expected to compete in the ITU World Triathlon Bermuda.

The RFPs with a submission deadline of September 14 are: communications, storage and trucking.

The remainder all have a submission deadline of September 21. These are audio-video, barricades, cabins, furniture, grandstands, hospitality, lifts and cherry pickers, racecourse entertainment, pasta party, scaffolding, tents, toilets and venue entertainment.

“ITU World Triathlon Bermuda is a world-class event and as we’ve seen in the past Bermuda has the talent to meet the highest global standards,” the BTA’s chief product and experiences development officer Pat Phillip-Fairn said.

“The team of people working on this event is committed to finding the right local partnerships.

“Whenever there is an economic opportunity, we will share it publicly online. Individuals and companies should submit proposals if they believe they have what it takes to get the job done.”

The ITU World Triathlon Bermuda will welcome international athletes, fans and officials to the island beginning April 2018. The first batch of RFPs deal mainly with spectator entertainment and logistics between Thursday, April 26 and Saturday, April 28, 2018, on Front Street and other nearby locations along the proposed racecourse.

The WTSBDA Organising Committee is made up of members of the Bermuda Tourism Authority, the Bermuda Triathlon Association and other local stakeholders who work alongside experienced international organisations that put on triathlon events around the world.
