Hard work paying off for Smith

In the goals: the hard work is paying off for Lewes striker Smith

Jonté Smith’s impressive scoring form could not have come at a better time for promotion chasing Lewes.

The Bermuda striker has bagged three goals in his last two games for the Ryman Isthmian League South Division club to put them in the hunt for the play-offs.

Smith notched a brace during Lewes’ emphatic 4-0 home victory over East Grinstead Town last weekend and then followed up with another tally in a 3-0 win away to South Park on Monday.

The back-to-back victories have catapulted Lewes into fourth in the table with six matches remaining.

Smith said that the hard work the coaching staff have put the players through on the training ground is paying off.

“Our team has been working hard in training on pressing high and creating more chances, being more decisive and clinical in the final third,” Smith said.

“The attacking players are all benefiting from all the work the manager has been doing with us.”

Smith has returned from a knee injury that kept him on the sidelines earlier in the season.

“I had tendinitis in my knee early in the season that kept me out for awhile,” he said.

“Thankfully I had some very good physios to get me through it all at 110 per cent and I don’t have any more issues.”

Despite his injuries, Smith has scored 13 goals this term, including a stunning left-footed shot from outside of the box against East Grinstead Town.

He attributes his rich vein of form to the extra effort he put in while recovering from his injury.

“I think it’s been the hard work in the recovery process; making sure that I did everything right to prevent the injury from coming back,” Smith said.

“That is what I think has helped my form towards the end of the season.”

Lewes are away to third-placed Greenwich Borough on Saturday and will be without former Crystal Palace defender Matt George who was sent off in Monday’s win, while winger Wilfried Grimaud remains doubtful through injury.
