Nathan Trott put in another solid performance during West Ham United Under-23 side’s goalless draw away to Newcastle United in the Premier League 2 at St James’ Park on Monday.

The visiting side were reduced to ten men on the half-hour mark after Arthur Masuaku was dismissed for an off the ball incident.

But Newcastle were unable to take advantage of their numerical advantage with Bermudian Trott outstanding in goal.

The former BAA and Bermuda Under-17 player came to West Ham’s rescue on several occasions to keep the home side — who struck the woodwork in the 69th minute — at bay.

“I think we showed great character in the game especially with ten men,” Trott said.

“The lads showed discipline and I think it was an important point at the end of the day. Teamwork-wise, we’re probably the best in the league. I think that will take us forward in the upcoming games. We were congratulated in the dressing room afterwards for keeping our heads and discipline, because obviously it’s hard to play with ten men.”

Terry Westley, the West Ham Under-23 manager, praised his players’ character and was pleased to come away with a point.

“Any game here, even with 11 men, was going to be a tough game, whoever we brought,” Westley said. “They’ve had a very good run of results, they’re very settled, they have the same group of players and it was always going to be a very tough game.

“They’re in good form and here at St James’, it was always going to be a difficult game. It made it doubly hard losing a man that early.

“You can’t fault our boys’ character, desire to play and we also had one or two really good opportunities maybe to even win the game.”

The result left West Ham fifth in the Premier League 2 table.

“No one has picked up three points [on Monday] so everyone is still quite close together and I think we can still finish in the play-offs,” Trott said.

West Ham and Newcastle will do battle for the second time in five days when the two sides meet in the last 16 of the Premier League Cup at St James’ Park on Saturday.

“Having 11 men will be more of an advantage and that will hopefully help us play the football that we can normally play,” Trott added.

“If we can do that on Saturday, we can come out victorious for sure.”

Trott signed his first professional contract at West Ham in December last year keeping the goalkeeper at the club at least until 2020.

The 18-year-old is one of England’s most highly rated youngsters and joined up with the England Under-19 squad in October.
