They say from little seeds grow mighty trees.

The Garden Club of Bermuda is hoping that from Little Seedlings will grow mighty gardeners who appreciate the natural world around them.

For the past two years, preschool children have been growing their own food and planting trees and flowers as part of a programme designed to teach them about the environment.

Club spokeswoman Sylvie Elliott said the gardening programme, running from October to May, had been “extremely successful”.

“Our mission is to teach young children to embrace, respect and delight in the natural world around them and to understand the enjoyment and complexity of growing their own food,” Ms Elliott said.

“Our goals are to provide interactive exploration through garden walks, nature books, games, songs, crafts and foods in an hour class for three and four-year-olds and their parents and grandparents.”

The 2016-17 classes are Busy Bees, How to Grow a Pizza, Dirt and Gardening, Trees, Cacti and Succulents, April Showers and May Flowers.

“We are most grateful for the support received by the Parks Department, most particularly [foreman] Khari Martin, who is responsible for the kitchen gardens in the Botanical Gardens,” Ms Elliott added.

Liz Nystrom and her four-year-old son Beckett have attended every class from the beginning.

She said: “Beckett always looks forward to the Little Seedlings classes organised by the Garden Club.

“He has planted a tree, grown vegetables from seed and created his very own rock garden. Nearly every time we go to the Botanical Gardens he hopes he is there for more gardening so we always pass by the kitchen garden to see how the vegetables are progressing.

“The classes also include a story linked to the topic we are learning about and a delicious homemade snack which is always a big hit.”

Classes are limited to ten to 15 children, who must be aged 3 and 4, and are $15 for Garden Club members and $20 for non-members. Children must be accompanied by an adult.
