The Bermuda Regiment is to erect a memorial honouring soldiers who died while in service.An appeal has been launched to ensure no-one is overlooked 41 names are on the list at present.The memorial will be established near the flagpole at Warwick Camp, hopefully before the end of this year.Said a Regiment spokesman: “The process of appealing to the public for their input was used when creating the Bermuda War Memorial and proved essential.“Once a comprehensive list is compiled from the records at Warwick Camp and the public’s knowledge, the names, records, and service dates will be verified by the National Archives and National Records to ensure accuracy. It is vital that we exhaust every resource to create an accurate list.”Regiment officials have been working on the design phase of the plan for the past six months.Three designs are now on the shortlist a selection will be made within the next two weeks.The memorial will be established near the flagpole, the senior position for any parade held at Warwick Camp and the point where the body of soldiers always face.Soldiers included as part of the memorial must have been enlisted and actively serving in the Regiment at the time of their death.The spokesman noted: “Those who were deferred, awaiting exemption from service, or an absentee are not eligible.”To list of 41 names has yet to be verified by the National Records or National Archives.Some entries may be incorrect and some service information may be missing where people died before “the current electronic administration system was implemented at Warwick Camp”.Any missing information will be added before the list is finalised, the spokesman added.He appealed to anyone with information to forward it to Regimental Sergeant Major WO1 Gavin Rayner on 238-3921 or gsrayner@gov.bm, by Monday, March 18.
