TEDx Bermuda, the showcase for “ideas worth sharing”, is back on March 25 for its seventh instalment, with ten speakers from disciplines ranging from marine science to virtual reality coming to the island.

John Narraway, chairman of the event, hailed it as “an afternoon for those who are inquisitive”, saying the popular annual fixture had once again won “unbelievable” support from the community and sponsors.

The first round of speakers, just announced, includes Falko Kuester, a computer scientist whose work in “cultural heritage diagnostics and preservation” is aimed at creating “digital surrogates of world heritage sites and artefacts”.

Also speaking is scientist David Vaughan, a designer of marine aquaculture projects and businesses. He is executive director at the Mote Tropical Research Lab in the Florida Keys, and manages the Coral Reef Restoration Programme.

Susan Erdman from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology is a pioneer in the study of gut microbes and their interaction with the human body, which include links with various cancers.

TED guests will hear from Joel Newton, CEO of The Congregation — dedicated to the pursuit of virtual reality. He cofounded the Virtual Reality Company, which has worked with film-makers such as Steven Spielberg and Ridley Scott.

They will be joined by British artist Stephen Bliss, whose career as a senior artist for Rockstar Games included helping to establish the illustrative style for the smash hit Grand Theft Auto. More speakers are to be announced “shortly”, Mr Narraway said.

TEDx Bermuda will be held at the Fairmont Southampton’s Mid Ocean Ampitheatre. The theme is #reinvenTED, and tickets are on sale at www.ptix.bm.
