Rich vein of form gives Wells hope

On fire: Wells has scored Huddersfield’s past two winners

Nahki Wells, the Huddersfield Town striker, is keen to extend his superb goalscoring form of late.

The Bermuda forward has scored the winner in Huddersfield’s previous two outings in the Sky Bet Championship against Bristol City and Burton Albion to take his season tally to five.

Wells has not enjoyed the best of times since the start of the season, but appears to have put all of that behind him and regained his confidence and scoring touch with fourth-placed Huddersfield very much in the hunt for promotion to English football’s top tier heading into the midway stage of the season.

“I’ve felt I’ve been through a little bit of a tough patch in front of goal and found it difficult to get opportunities,” Wells said. “Hopefully, it [goals] gives me a bit of confidence to go on a run now.”

Wells finds himself on the verge of a feat he has yet to achieve in a Huddersfield shirt.

Should he hit the target in Huddersfield’s Championship clash away to Norwich City at Carrow Road tonight, it will mark the first time that Wells has scored in three consecutive outings playing for the Yorkshire club.

“It’s a great story that Nahki has scored two in a row,” David Wagner, the Huddersfield head coach, said. “He worked unbelievably in defence (against Burton) and had the right working attitude and fighting attitude we needed. And, of course, he has been in the right position at the right moment.”

Wells signed with Huddersfield for a then club record £1.3 million from Bradford City during the January transfer window in 2014.

He scored the winner in his debut against Millwall at the John Smith’s Stadium and has topped Huddersfield’s scoring charts in each of the previous two seasons.

The 26-year-old striker is said to be a potential £8 million target for Championship sides Norwich City and Fulham when the January transfer window opens and turned down a new offer in the summer.

However, the club insist that Wells, who has 18 months remaining on his contract, is not seeking a move away and is focused solely on playing for Huddersfield and helping them push for honours.

Wells was previously rumoured to have attracted the interest of Championship side Aston Villa, whom he scored against in the 2012-13 Capital One Cup semi-final during Bradford’s memorable run to the final where he became the first Bermudian to play at the new Wembley Stadium.

Wells, who scored 18-goals last season, is also the first Bermudian to score at Wembley, having achieved the feat in Bradford’s 3-0 triumph over Northampton Town in the Sky Bet League Two play-off final during the same season.
