Ming fitness doubt for Dandy Town clash

Trevin Ming, the Somerset Trojans captain, remains doubtful for the holders’ Friendship Trophy quarter-final clash away to Dandy Town Hornets on Sunday.

The Trojans centre back pulled a hamstring during the West Enders’ Premier Division home fixture with Boulevard on November 20 that ended in a 2-2 draw.

Ming, who led Trojans to a record-equalling eleventh Friendship Trophy triumph after they beat perennial rivals PHC Zebras 2-1 at Somerset Cricket Club on New Year’s Day, has returned to training but, according to a team source, is “highly unlikely” to play any part in Sunday’s cup tie against Town at St John’s Field.

Trojans are not the only team struck by injury, as last year’s runners-up PHC are without forward Mazhye Burchall, who bruised his MCL in a traffic accident last week, for tomorrow’s quarter-final meeting with Flanagan’s Onions at Goose Gosling Field.

“Mazhye has been a key addition but we have a wide range of players who can accommodate and fill in where he’s not able to,” Scott Morton, the PHC coach, said.

Returning to PHC’s line-up is midfielder Idress Sharrieff who has recovered from a shoulder injury.

“Sharrief brings more pace to add to what we already have and a football brain,” Morton said. “He is a very intelligent player, very committed and very dynamic in his wide position.”

PHC top the Premier Division standings and are unbeaten in the league at the midway stage of the season and are firm favourites heading into tomorrow’s cup tie with lowly Flanagan’s. Still, Morton is not taking anything for granted.

“Flanagan’s is always going to be a ticklish match,” he said. “And so our game plan will be no different than before, which is always to be as dominant in the things we do and nullify the opponents with the things they bring.”

Sunday’s remaining Friendship Trophy quarter-final matches will see Robin Hood host Dudley Eve Trophy holders Devonshire Cougars at Goose Gosling Field while North Village are home to Devonshire Colts at Bernard Park.

This weekend’s First Division Shield quarter-final matches kick off tomorrow night at Goose Gosling Field, where holders BAA host Wolves.

Sunday’s remaining Shield quarter-finals will see St David’s face Ireland Rangers at Goose Gosling Field, X Roads take on Young Men’s Social Club at Bernard Park and St George’s do battle with Hamilton Parish at St John’s Field.
