Hornets finally up and running

Jomar Wilkinson, the Dandy Town coach, breathed a sigh of relief after the Premier Division champions recorded their first league victory of the season with an emphatic 5-1 demolition of Flanagan’s Onions at Goose Gosling Field on Saturday.

Angelo Simmons, the Town captain, led the charge with four goals while Kor-Von Tucker grabbed the visiting side’s other tally. Keston Lewis replied for Flanagan’s before limping off with a hamstring injury.

The win brought Hornet’s winless streak to a halt, much to the delight of Wilkinson.

“We definitely needed this result and it was definitely a big relief,” Wilkinson said. “This result will definitely boost confidence even though we have always felt that we have been playing good enough to win games.

“I thought we did a better job defending which helped us to lay the foundation to play the way we did at the offensive end.”

Although encouraged with the result, Wilkinson said there is still much work to be done as Town bid to overcome one of their worst starts to a season in recent memory.

“I still think we have a long way to go,” Wilkinson said. “The players were not honest during the pre-season and it showed in our game.

“But now they are starting to be honest and if they can continue to stay honest I feel we can accomplish a few things.”

Devonshire Cougars continued their impressive form of late as they edged Boulevard 2-1 at Police Field yesterday.

Mikkiel Thomas gave Cougars a 1-0 advantage at the half before Ian Coke, the Boulevard striker, equalised shortly after the break. Machi Battersbee grabbed Cougars’ winner midway through the second half.

“It was an ugly derby today but a good result because we showed that we can win not playing pretty,” Omar Butterfield, the Cougars coach, said.

PHC missed the chance to extend their lead at the top of the table when Keishen Bean scored a 90th-minute equaliser from a free kick to earn North Village a 2-2 draw at PHC Field.

Bean netted twice in the final 15 minutes as Village came from two goals down after a penalty from Cecoy Robinson, the PHC captain, and a strike substitute Tristan Hall.

“He hasn’t score much this season but in the last three or four games he has found a way to score,” Devarr Boyles, the Village coach, said. “Today we needed the goals. To be fair to him he hasn’t always played in the striker’s position and now he has a renewed appetite for finishing.”
