Despite the class champions already being determined, there was still plenty of action in yesterday's penultimate race day in the Pepsi National
Pride seemed to have been at stake as champions Kemo Simons, in the 80cc class, and Aaron Pace in the 125 B, were denied clean sweeps, though Chris Maxwell took his points tally for the season past the 500 mark with three wins in the 125 C class.
Maxwell and Simons, who also reached the 500-point total yesterday in the 80cc, look certain to step up to tougher classes next season; Maxwell in the company of Pace, Buddy Joell and Robbie Smith in the 125 B and Simons into the 125 C.
Jamel Hassell, already certain to finish second, clinched two of the three wins in the 80cc when he won the first and third motos. Simons had a win in the second moto sandwiched in between seconds in the first and third races, while Craig Penchaud had a third and two fourths to finish third for the day.
Hassell collected 42 points for his two firsts and a second while Simons finished with 39 points, having clinched his only win of the day when he took over the lead from Hassell in the last couple of laps of the second moto.
In that same moto, Jason DeSilva was `black-flagged' after seven laps when his seat fell off. He returned to the pit and was soon back in the race with the seat firmly bolted on, though he finished well down.
DeSilva bounced back to finish third in the final moto to strengthen his third-place overall position over Howard Paynter. Paynter had his own bike problems in the final moto when the `whoops' section (a series of bumps near the finish line) left him with broken back shocks, as the rear fender was practically sitting on the back wheel, which forced him out of the race.
Robbie Smith, though unable to prevent 125 B champion Pace from winning the first two races, is one rider who has mastered the `whoops', leaping the first two and then using his momentum to go over the final three.
After Pace won the first two motos, with Smith second in each and Ras Mykkal third and fourth, Smith pulled out all the stops to deny Pace a clean sweep.
Riding as though a title was at stake, Smith established a comfortable early lead and was never seriously challenged by Pace who had to settle for third while Buddy Joell was second to go with his third in the previous moto.
Smith was second for the day while Joell, with his second in the final moto, pipped Mykkal for third overall after both had a third and fourth. Mykkal finished with another fourth.
Duprey Joell and Donnie Moss have already wrapped up the 250 B and C classes.
The Pee Wee 50cc and 80cc classes, which have been used an added attraction this season in between races on the bigger bikes, will be a national class next season when they are incorporated into the BACU programme.
The final race day of the 1993-94 season will be held on March 27.
MOVING UP -- The Pee Wee 50cc and 80cc classes, which have been used as exhibitions this season at Coney Island, will become a national class of the Bermuda Auto Cycle Union next season.
