Wells rejects new contract

Weighing up his options: Bermuda striker Wells

Nahki Wells has reportedly rejected a new contract offer from Huddersfield Town, igniting speculation that the Bermudian striker could be looking to leave the Sky Bet Championship side.

Wells, who joined Huddersfield from Bradford City for £1.3 million in January 2014, has 18 months remaining on his contract.

Huddersfield are presently fourth in the table after an impressive start to the season and the potential sale of Wells will serve as a major blow to the club’s promotion bid.

The 26-year-old is said to be a potential £8m target for Championship sides Norwich City and Fulham when the January transfer window opens.

Wells was previously rumoured to have attracted the interest of Championship side Aston Villa, whom he scored against in the 2012-13 Capital One Cup semi-final during Bradford City’s historical run to the final where he became the first Bermudian to play at the new Wembley Stadium.

Wells, who was Town’s 18-goal leading scorer last season, is also the first Bermudian to score at the iconic Wembley having achieved the feat in Bradford’s 3-0 triumph over Northampton Town in the Sky Bet League Two play-off final during the same season.

Wells, who has scored three goals this term, has been a regular in Huddersfield head coach David Wagner’s line-up, missing only the opening-day victory against Brentford and the EFL Cup defeat at Shrewsbury Town through injury.

It would not be beyond the bounds of possibility for Wells to be offered a contract extension at this stage, even though his deal runs until the end of next season. However, media reports suggest that Wells has rejected initial overtures from Huddersfield and that a move away from the Yorkshire club when the January transfer window opens cannot be ruled out.

Wells, the Bermuda captain, had been Huddersfield’s record signing before the arrival of £1.8m defender Christopher Schindler from Germany last summer.
