Legendary quartet honoured by series

Ed Sherlock won six Bermuda Half marathon titles between 1956 and 1962, including five straight

The legacy of some of Bermuda’s greatest runners will be honoured throughout a series of road races.

Swan’s Running Club announced at a press conference yesterday the 2017 Legends Race Series, which comprises of four races recognising local running legends Stanley Burgess, Ed Sherlock, Raymond Swan and Ludwig Cann.

The series includes the Ed Sherlock 10K, Ray Swan 8K, Ludwig Cann 10K and the “Sir” Stanley Burgess 5K.

Participants will earn points for their placement in each race with the top male and female who have accrued the highest points in the best three of four races being crowned the Legends champion.

Double points will be awarded to all participants in the fourth and final race of the series.

It is mandatory for athletes within the series to participate in no fewer than three of the four races, which will be certified and sanctioned by the Bermuda National Athletics Association.

In the event of a tie, the tiebreaker will be determined by the fastest recorded time in the first event date where both individuals participated.

Additionally, the first male and female winner in each age category will win the series titles and receive trophies.

The age groups consist of Open (20-39), Masters (over 40), Seniors (over 50), Veterans (over 60) and Legends (over 70) and are based on the age of participants as of February 1, 2017.

Overall winners are not eligible for age group awards.

Among those attending yesterday’s press conference at the BGA headquarters were Ed Sherlock and Raymond Swan, who have won eight Bermuda Half-Marathon Derby titles between them.
