BFA launches probe into derby brawl
The Bermuda Football Association has launched a probe into a fight that marred Sunday’s Premier Division derby between Somerset Eagles and Somerset Trojans at White Hill Field.
The BFA confirmed yesterday it is looking into the circumstances that led to the brawl, involving players and supporters, and said those responsible for bringing the game into disrepute will be dealt with accordingly.
Tempers boiled over in the final minute of the game, which ended 1-1.
“The Bermuda Football Association is aware of the incident that occurred at the match between Somerset Bridge Recreation Club and Somerset Cricket Club at White Hill Field,” the BFA said in a statement.
“There are disciplinary procedures and protocols in place, and the machinery is in motion to deal with the actions that had taken place between the opponents during the course of the match.
“It would be inappropriate to comment at this time on any specifics, as comments may prejudice this process.”
The incident occurred after Shaquille Bean, the Trojans goalkeeper, ran out of his box and cleared the ball upfield and out of play. The ball was caught by Danvers Seymour Jr, the Trojans coach, who held onto it to allow his goalkeeper to get back in position, leading to tensions as an Eagles player tried to prise it from him in order to take a quick throw-in.
According to an official at the game, Seymour was struck by an Eagles player and the two squared off before supporters and players from both teams joined in the mêlée.
Last week Trojans also had an incident in their home match against Dandy Town, the defending champions, when the rear window of the Town team bus was smashed by a brick thrown by some youths after the game.
• Bermuda ended their Caribbean Football Union Under-20 Championship campaign on a winning note after beating Trinidad and Tobago 2-1 in the third-place play-off at the Stadion Ergilio Hato in Curaçao on Sunday.
Knory Scott and substitute Mikiel Thomas scored for Bermuda, with the latter notching the winner four minutes from time after Trinidad had equalised early in the second half.
As well as placing third, the island’s best showing at this level, Bermuda also qualified for the Concacaf Under-20 Championship in Costa Rica in February after finishing runners-up in group A.
CFU Under-20 champions Haiti, runners-up Antigua and Barbuda, Trinidad, and St Kitts and Nevis were the remaining qualifiers and will join Mexico, the United States and Canada from the North American Region along with Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras from the Central American region.
The BFA has invited the public to welcome the team as they arrive home at the LF Wade International Airport tonight at 8pm.
