Bermuda punished after lacking cutting edge

Bermuda Under-20 coach Kyle Lightbourne

Bermuda’s bid for supremacy in the Caribbean Football Union Under-20 finals came to a halt after last night’s 3-0 defeat against Haiti in the semi-finals at the Stadion Ergilio Hato in Curaçao.

Kyle Lightbourne’s charges enjoyed swathes of possession but lacked cutting edge in front of goal where they failed to muster a single shot on target.

“We huffed and puffed and had enough possession but on the day we were not good enough in front of goal,” Lightbourne said.

“We had moments in the game where we looked like we were going to do something but in the end it didn’t quite happen.

“Haiti were the better team on the day and we have to accept that and move on. They kept us at arm’s length and were the better team on the day.”

Haiti took the lead in the sixth minute from a corner after Bermuda failed to deal with the second ball, an advantage which they carried through to the interval.

Bermuda fell further behind two minutes into the second half when their opponents doubled their lead on a counterattack.

Haiti then put the game further beyond reach in the 63rd minute with a clinical finish after Bermuda failed to clear their lines from a cross.

Lightbourne made two changes to his team ahead of last night’s match from the one that lost 3-2 to Antigua and Barbuda in Bermuda’s final group A match on Tuesday night, with Jaz Ratteray-Smith coming in for the suspended Knory Scott and Jatino Richardson-Martin for the injured Paul Douglas.

Bermuda reached the last four and qualified for next February’s Concacaf Under 20 Championship in Costa Rica after finishing runners up in group A.

Lightbourne’s charges pipped group favourites St Kitts and Nevis for the remaining spot semi-final on goal difference.

Bermuda beat St Kitts 3-1 in their opening group match, were held to a 1-1 draw by home side Curaçao in their second before losing to the unbeaten Antiguans.

Bermuda will now face Trinidad and Tobago, losers against group A winners Antigua and Barbuda in last night’s opening semi-final, in the third-place match tomorrow.

Lightbourne could be forced to make further changes to his team as Richardson-Martin and Rai Sampson are both doubtful after picking up injuries in last night’s match.

“Jahtino hurt his shoulder and Rai suffered an ankle injury, so those are two we are really going to have to look at it before the next game,” said Lightbourne, who also coaches Robin Hood.
