A fundraiser in aid of two families with young children who have lost a parent has raised more than $10,000.

Rosa’s Cantina and Chopstick’s Fusion teamed up with Gosling’s to create the “Purple Promise” cocktail, which was sold in both restaurants last month.

All of the proceeds went to Patrina Cumbermack and Nakia Smith, who were presented with the funds and treated to a free lunch with their children at Rosa’s on Tuesday.

“It was beautiful,” Lindsay Durham, the Director of Operations and Human Resources for both restaurants, told The Royal Gazette. “We surprised the parents and had all their children come.

“All the schools allowed them to come and it was an amazing experience for them.”

Nakia Smith, whose wife Kamala Smith died in July after a long battle with cancer, was completely taken by surprise.

“We didn’t have a clue about it,” he said, adding that his boss told him to meet him at the Cabinet building.

Thinking he was going there for a walk, he was left stunned when his boss took him to Rosa’s where some of his family members, including his four children, had already gathered.

“It means a lot to know that people are still willing to help,” he said.

Patrina Cumbermack lost her husband Jereme Cumbermack, with whom she had three children, in January last year.

Being a single parent had been hard, she said.

“It means the world,” she said of the donation. “I didn’t even know what was going on. I didn’t know the magnitude.”

Mrs Cumbermack had been contacted by Ms Durham, who informed her the fundraiser would be happening, but said it still felt “surreal” even after being presented with the funds.

By selling the “Purple Promise” cocktail, inspired by Mrs Smith’s love of the colour purple, as well as Mr Smith and Mrs Cumbermack’s promise to always keep the memory of their spouses alive, the sister restaurants raised a total of $10,661.20, which that was split between the families. Special gifts were also arranged for the children.

Ms Durham thanked Gosling’s for their continuing support and added: “It was a really nice experience.

“It’s important because although we are a small company, we feel that there’s so many families and people out there that are in need or have had a great loss. We want to be able to give back and show that the community that we’re there for them and we want to give back and we want to help as much as we can.

“Obviously we can’t help everybody but when we can, we will.

“To lose a father or a wife and have children that are only raised with one parent now, from having a two-parent income, becomes a big strain. That’s why we did the Purple Promise.”
