Butterfield romps to time-trial victory

Comfortable win: Butterfield finished nearly three minutes ahead of Neil de Ste Croix

Tyler Butterfield stormed to victory in the Bank of Bermuda Foundation Time-Trial Championships at Clearwater Beach in St David’s today.

The professional triathlete covered the 19.3-mile course in 44min 22sec to finish nearly three minutes ahead of Neil de Ste Croix, who also took the male masters title.

Anthony Bartley was the third overall male in 47:09.

Top cyclist Dominique Mayho returned from Belgium to compete, only to be ruled out through illness.

Taking the women’s title was Karen Smith in 43:05, with Nicole Mitchell claiming second in 43:24 and Ashley Estwanik third in 43:51.

Smith, who also captured the female masters title, was just 19 seconds ahead of Mitchell, who suffered a puncture on the last lap, forcing her to run her bike down the last hill before remounting and riding in on the rim.

Junior male and female honours went to Matthew Oliveira and Alyssa Rowse.
