?Garden? falls victim to voyeuristic obsession
The appearance of an almost voyeuristic home video in Lech Majewski?s film ?The Garden of Earthly Delights? takes away from the beautiful setting and the ever-present Hieronymus Bosch painting of the same name.
Claudia and Chris, the two main characters of the film also shot all the footage. This made the film look like a home video, albeit erotic and intrusive.
In the story, Claudia, an art historian, is obsessed with Bosch?s Renaissance painting,
In the Garden of Earthly Delights?, while Chris works on his PhD in naval engineering but is ultimately obsessed with Claudia, who is dying and has chosen to spend her last days in Venice.
Before her inevitable death, Claudia wishes to leave behind a documentary of Bosch and throughout the film becomes part of the seductive painting by living out parts of the mysteriously beautiful triptych.
They spend time recreating parts of the painting involving naked figures inside of a giant, plastic ball or eating various types of fruit.
The physical beauty of Venice envelops the whole movie while the painting becomes the third and ultimately the most interesting character in this documentary-style film.
The premise of Claudia?s story is intriguing as she grasps on to her two last remaining passions: Bosch and Chris.
The attachment between the two characters becomes stronger and emotional as they live through paradise represented in the painting while Claudia?s sickness worsens.
Ultimately, the emotionally and sexually charged story is lost in the seemingly amateur video that appears to lack any direction and the lingering camera shots on the two?s naked bodies pushes the film on the verge of soft porn.
