Jared Smith Monkman, son of John and Josephine Monkman of Antigonish, Nova Scotia, Canada and grandson of Lillian Monkman and the late K.V. Monkman of "Periwinkle", 18 Ord Road, Warwick, graduated from Dalhousie University, Halifax, Nova Scotia, with a Masters Degree of Applied Science in Civil Engineering 2002, a Bachelor of Engineering Degree with Distinction May 2000 from Dalhousie University, and St. Francis Xavier University, Antigonish, Nova Scotia. Jared was a 1994 graduate of Warwick Academy, Bermuda.

Jared was recruited by CN (formally Canadian National Railways) for its bridges and structures division. He is currently residing in Winnipeg, Manitoba as part of the company's Management Training Programme.
