Floods of worried calls have sparked Government to set up an information hotline about unsafe walls and buildings.

Works and Engineering Minister Alex Scott said nearly two dozen people had reported concerns following the tragedy at Bermuda College after a retaining wall collapsed and killed teachers' aide Andrea Bicarie last week.

On Wednesday, two women escaped injury when their bike and car fell into a sinkhole which had developed in a car park in Somerset.

Mr. Scott said most buildings and structures were well put together but people needed to be vigilant and report their concerns.

Government yesterday warned that many walls predated planning legislation and that owners are responsible and liable for walls when they build, purchase or inherit a property which has a retaining structure.

The information line, which is set to begin running early next week, will take calls about retaining walls and structures which pose a threat.

However Mr. Scott said passing on information to Government did not mean it assumed responsibility or liability.
