Meteorologists hunt for missing mascot

Radar out for Maud: Maud, the unofficial mascot of the Bermuda Weather Service, has gone missing.

Maud the Weather Service dog has gone missing and her owners, Bermuda Weather Service director Roger Williams and his wife Annie, are pleading with the community for help in finding her

Maud, a stray, had been living on the Mid-Ocean golf course for at least six months and possibly a year when she was adopted by the Weather Service couple last September. She disappeared about three weeks ago.

Maud spent Hurricane Fabian inside the Weather Service offices with the other staff, sheltering peacefully under a table even as the roof of the building was torn off and the humans around her wondered if they should be panicking.

Mrs. Williams said the dog was obviously well-trained at one point because she can sit, stay, shake, and all the other standard dog tricks.

However it was also obvious that at one time or another, Maud was badly beaten. ?She ducks if you raise your arm, she?s terrified of men. But she never barks, she never growls. She is an amazing animal.?

Dubbed ?Maud? ? ?My Annie?s Unwanted Dog? ? and adopted as the unofficial dog of the Bermuda Weather Service, Maud even went with Mrs. Williams to church every Sunday.

Now the church is praying the pup is found, Mrs. Williams said.

About 20 people have combed the Ferry Reach area, where the Williams live, and no sign has been found of the dog.

She was spotted once in the Swizzle Inn area but has since disappeared again. ?She has totally gone to ground,? Mrs. Williams said. Anyone who spots Maud can contact the Williams? on 297-0331 or the SPCA on 236-7333.
