Hospital officials yesterday announced they have asked for the last set of information before choosing a partner for the rebuilding of the King Edward VII Memorial Hospital.

The Bermuda Hospitals Board (BHB) said it had released its request for proposal (RFP) to the three selected bidding teams.

Balfour Beatty Capital Inc, Bermuda Healthcare Solutions and Paget Health Services are now expected to submit binding proposals fitting BHB's specifications for the new facility. Based on the submissions, one bidder will be selected sometime late next year.

Bermuda Hospitals Board CEO David Hill called the release of the RFP a milestone, adding: "BHB has carried out an extensive investigation, evaluation and consultation process in order to develop specifications for the new facilities that will meet the future acute health care needs of Bermuda."

The new facilities will include Bermuda's first dedicated surgery unit, along with 90 single-occupancy en suite patient rooms, diagnostic imaging services and a new emergency room.

It will also house ambulatory care services dealing with oncology, dialysis, asthma and diabetes.

The $315 million project will be the first Public Private Partnership, or PPP. Construction is estimated to take around three years, with a completion date in 2014.

Last month, Health Minister Walter Roban called the project a national priority, saying: "No one who visits our existing hospital can help but be aware of their space constraints."

A BHB spokeswoman said: "The members of each team shortlisted represent a balanced mix of both Bermudian and international companies that have significant experience with projects of this nature."
