Goat set for full debut

Shaun Goater may get his first start tonight for Southend when they take on Championship side Southampton in the opening round of the Carling Cup.

The Goat played just nine minutes of Saturday?s draw 1-1 with Huddersfield after young striker Freddy Eastwood was sent off for violent conduct after shoving David Holdsworth and the home side resisted the opportunity to send on the Bermudian forward until late on as they attempted to play for a share of the points.

Veteran Goater, who scored on his debut for the Shrimpers away at Walsall last week, replaced Mark Gower in the 81st minute as Steve Tilson?s men hung on for a point against the Terriers in front of 5,567 fans.

But with Eastwood starting a three-match suspension tonight, Goater may get his first taste of action from the start for his new side when they welcome the Saints to Roots Hall.

Goater has been working hard on his fitness after picking up a calf injury in pre-season but after two weeks of intensive training, the 35-year-old may be ready for a full 90 minutes.

His last goal for previous club Reading was scored at this stage of the League Cup last year against Oxford United and The Goat will be looking forward to again taking on Championship opposition, managed by regular Bermuda visitor Harry Redknapp.

Southend will be without Eastwood and Duncan Jupp for tonight?s game but are expected to welcome back Goater?s former Manchester City team-mate Spencer Prior into the side.
