Manders stunned by Towlson

Neal Towlson, the Coral Beach and Tennis Club head professional, caused an upset at the BLTA Open Singles Challenge on Monday when he defeated Gavin Manders, Bermuda’s No 1 and top seed, 7-6, 6-1.

Fourth-seeded Towlson, is undefeated in the tournament so far, having also beaten High Seymour 6-0, 6-0 and leads the table in group A.

Towlson next plays Yves Doyon tonight. Doyon is also undefeated, having beaten Seymour 6-3, 6-0 in his only match so far.

Tonight, Scott Redmond, who lost 6-0, 6-0 to Manders in his only other match, takes on Doyon, while Manders plays Seymour, hoping to bounce back from yesterday’s defeat. In today’s other match, Seymour plays Redmond.

In group B, David Thomas tops the table, having upset second-seed Jenson Bascome 6-2, 6-3 and Sam Butler 6-2, 6-3.

Butler is second in the group after beating Wilfred Gonzalves 6-1, 6-0 and Bascome is third, after his 6-2, 6-0 win over Benjamin Lines.

Bascome takes on Butler today in a match that may decide who goes through to the semi-finals with Thomas, while Lines and Gonsalves will also battle it out.

Lines plays Butler today while Thomas returns to action against Gonsalves.

The winners and runners-up of each group will proceed to the semi-finals on Friday at 5.30pm, while the men’s final will take place on Saturday at 3pm. The women’s final will start at 1pm.

In the women’s draw, Kaylah Ming, the top seed, leads group A after defeating Shelby Madeiros 6-1, 6-1 while Emma Astwood is second after toppling Clare Ulvr-Green 6-1, 6-4.

Ming will look to keep her winning run going against Ulvr-Green today while Harvey will look to consolidate second place against Madeiros.

In group B, Ashley Brooks, the second seed, eased past Claudia Philipsz-Jones 6-1, 6-0 to top the table while Kaila Harvey is in second place after beating Jahzuena Douglas 6-3, 6-2. Brooks plays Douglas today while Harvey faces Philipsz-Jones.
