Almost the entire Bermuda Glass workforce found themselves unemployed when they showed up for work on Monday morning.

Company bosses explained that they had gone into receivership and could no longer be in business.

Bermuda Glass was bought by Baptiste Builders Supply Ltd. in 2001 in a deal negotiated by its then president Larry Davis and Baptiste Builders Supply's chief executive officer Martin Willingale.

At the time the deal was described as a merger which would see Baptiste's staff grow from 24 to 37 and Baptiste Builders told The Royal Gazette then that the acquisition of Bermuda Glass would not result in any layoffs.

And the company predicted greater profitability as a result of the acquisition with plans to move Bermuda Glass into the same Khyber Pass location as Baptiste Builders Supply.

While Bermuda Glass did move to Khyber Pass, the operation continued to function as a separate company, The Royal Gazette understands.

Staff were called into a meeting with Raymonde Baptiste and lawyer Kim White as they showed up Monday morning to be given the news.

They were asked to fill in application forms for employment at Baptiste Builders Supply and they would be notified within 48 hours.

But according to at least one of the former employees nothing has happened since.

Redundancy pay was not offered and the staff has not been paid since last week, said the former employee who asked not to be named for this story.

Mr. White said that a statement will be released to the press today.
