Police Commissioner Jonathan Smith will not allow uniformed officers to stand watch outside nightclubs so they will be able to remain "impartial" in their responsibilities of reporting on licensed premises.

Police media relations spokesman Dwayne Caines broke the news yesterday after several nightclubs called for beefed up security to be provided by Police, working in their own time, in the interests of deterring troublemakers.

He said the Police Service was "anxious to preserve its impartiality" and would not support the employment of Police officers at licensed premises.

He explained: "The Commissioner has an obligation, in law, to ensure that licensed premises are inspected and there is also a reporting restriction to the Liquor Licensing Authority.

"The Bermuda Police Service believes that other options are available to increase the levels of security at such premises."

Escape club owner Paul Decouto floated the idea in the hope of deterring troublemakers, some of whom have recently been involved in violent outbursts in the vicinity of the club.

His call was supported by the management of O-Zone and the Spinning Wheel, who both welcomed any ideas that would help deter potential mischief makers.
