Fairmont Southampton is helping to make Bermuda a greener place ? by planting 250 cedar trees.

A release from the Fairmont Southampton said the hotel began its signature project ? to reintroduce Bermuda Cedars to the Island ? on Earth Day yesterday.

"On Earth Day we will reintroduce Bermuda Cedar Trees, hold a beach clean-up and have an underwater clean-up at our bay at Dolphin Quest," the resort said in a release.

The resort said its objective was to plant 250 Cedars around the property by 2007.

A landscaping team has already been growing its own cedar seedlings and have a target of producing 500 seedlings in the next two years.

The cedar seedlings will be donated to colleagues of the Fairmont Southampton to introduce cedars back into their homes and communities.

"In keeping with our rich history and tradition of Bermuda, as part of our new wedding package, we plan on offering a Bermuda Cedar tree to our newlyweds to commemorate their special day so they can come back and see the progress of their tree on their next anniversary," the resort's release said.

Bluebird boxes will also be placed around the property.
