Simons back on target for Chesterfield
Rai Simons scored as Chesterfield reserves beat Scunthorpe United reserves 4-0 yesterday to go top of the Final Third Development League East Division.
Simons, who missed Bermuda’s Caribbean Cup first-round preliminary matches against Cuba and French Guiana, closed out the scoring shortly after the interval to seal a fifth straight win for his team.
Early goals from Jake Orrell and Laurence Maguire gave the visiting side the perfect start and Callum Greaves added to the scoreline before the break.
“It was a good result, albeit against a young Scunthorpe side,” Ritchie Humphreys, the Chesterfield reserve-team coach, said.
“That said, we only had a handful of pros ourselves so it was a pleasing result.
“To get the clean sheet again was the starting point and to support that with four good goals made it an excellent match from our perspective.
“The players are continuing to do what’s asked of them, which is easier said than done, are the progress among the players is what we want to see.”
Former league leaders Notts County had their home game against Gateshead postponed yesterday, as Chesterfield took advantage. They have now played the same number of games as County.
“Being top is nice, the purpose of our games is always to win them and if that leads to winning leagues than that is what we want,” Humphreys added.
“The challenge for the lads now is to stay there through the remaining fixtures and if we can then that will be a great achievement.”
Simons was not named in the Chesterfield first-team squad for their match away to Oldham Athletic on Monday. Chesterfield lost the game 1-0 and are now just two points above the relegation zone.
They are at home to mid-table Port Vale on Saturday.
