Contest prevails in dinghy race thriller

exciting fitted dinghy racing of the season.

Good crew work and tactics carried Royal Bermuda Yacht Club's entry Contest II to overall day honours as they took over the top spot in the Coronation Cup standings from previous leaders Port Royal with a second and first place finish.

It was a crucial win for Contest skipper Andreas Lewin and his crew, who have trailed Port Royal all season.

In the first race, Port Royal decided to go with the larger number two rig while the rest of the fleet chose the more conservative number three.

And it was Alan Powell's Victory which was able to build on an early lead as the rest of the fleet fought for ground.

Contest , having moved into second place, attempted to lure Victory into a tacking duel but on one key shift the boats split tacks with Victory catching a huge lift which enabled her to establish a significant lead and eventually win the race.

In the second race there were no clear cut leaders until the very finish.

Port Royal , having gone to her number three rig, lost an early lead to Paula Lewin in Challenger with the rest of the fleet close behind.

While Challenger fought to establish her lead, the gap between all the boats was closing and it came down to the last beat.

As the fleet converged on the finish, Contest forced Challenger out, tacked and headed for the line, nipping her rival by a mere foot at the finish.
