Raynor ready for what lies ahead
Donna Raynor was returned for another two-year term as president of the Bermuda National Athletic Association, but will have a new vice-president and treasurer after Michelle Williams and Bob Oliver opted not to seek re-election during the association’s Annual General Meeting.
All officers were up for re-election as Raynor ran unopposed to secure another term. Mia Black, a board member, was voted in as vice-president while Jose Miranda was elected as a new member to the board and will assume the role of treasurer.
Dr Freddie Evans and Angela Berry, both board members, will resume their roles as general secretary and legal representative respectively. Two other new members of the board are Terry Lynn Paynter and Joyanne Clarke, while Paul Simons stood down as a board member.
Eight people ran for the six positions as directors and all of the BNAA affiliates who could cast a vote — MAAC, Flyers Track Club, West End Athletic Club, Pacers Track Club, Bermuda School Sports Federation and Swan’s Running Club — were present at the AGM.
Raynor admitted Williams and Oliver will be big losses to the board with their experience, but was equally optimistic about the “new energy” the incoming board members will bring to the association.
“As the president I am very happy with the new selections to the board,” Raynor said. “We thanked the three who were stepping down, they have contributed many years to this board and their experience will be missed but they are not far away if needed.
“I believe this new board brings new experiences, new energy and some new ideas. I look forward to working with them in these financially challenging times and with so much on the BNAA’s plate moving forward.”
Raynor added: “Michelle and Bob have been on the board for a long time and Michelle knows the administration policies and by-laws in and out. She has taught me a lot.
“She knows if I get in a bind that I’ll be picking up the phone and calling her and she’s fine with that. Just because she’s off the board, that’s not going to stop.
“Because we have a few things on our plate and I knew no one else was looking at running [for president], when this term is up I want to have somebody in place [as successor]. We’ve got the sport to this level and I don’t want it to fall by the wayside. When the time comes somebody is going to have to pick up the mantle.
“I’m excited about the people we have on the board, each of them are bringing something different, they all have different strengths that are going to help us. This is going to be a challenging year.”
