Rangers coach not concerned by relegation
This weekend’s Premier Division matches could have a strong bearing on the title and relegation issues as the top four and bottom six play among themselves.
These corresponding fixtures were only played on December 20 as make-up matches after games on the weekend of October 4 were called off because of Hurricane Joaquin.
Leaders Dandy Town, who suffered their first league loss last time out, entertain third-place North Village at St John’s Field on Sunday while Robin Hood, second, meet fourth-place PHC Zebras at Goose Gosling Field.
To add more intrigue to an exciting and unpredictable season, the relegation battle possibly involves six teams with just five points separating Devonshire Colts, fifth, from bottom pair Hamilton Parish and Devonshire Cougars who play Devonshire Recreation Club at 9pm.
After recent wins, Cougars and Parish are now on eight points, two behind Southampton Rangers and Boulevard while Colts and Somerset Trojans, the league champions, sit nervously in mid-table on 13 and 12 points respectively.
Keith Jennings, the Rangers coach, was delighted with his team’s 5-1 victory over Flanagan’s Onions in Wednesday’s FA Cup first-round replay and now looks ahead to a match against Boulevard, who thrashed Trojans 6-2 last weekend.
“I think it is going to be tight throughout the division,” Jennings said. “We are not in a good position or a bad position, but we need to be a little more confident and put ourselves in a position where we don’t need to worry about relegation.”
A good run in the FA Cup can sometimes affect a team’s league form, as Onions found out when they were relegated last season ahead of their first appearance in the FA Cup final, which they lost to Town.
“That’s why we have to stay focused, our main focus is the league especially with the position that we are in,” Jennings said.
“I’m not concerned about being relegated, my thing is keeping the style of football that we are playing and as long as we can finish off our chances it looks good.”
The losers of the Rangers and Boulevard match could slip into the bottom two depending on tonight’s result when Cougars and Parish go in search of their third wins in the league.
Ian Coke has made a timely return from injury to help Boulevard’s survival battle and could be a key man as they look for another goal blitz, having thrashed Rangers 6-0 on December 20 when the teams last met, before putting six past Trojans last weekend as Coke struck a hat-trick.
Devonshire Colts and Trojans, who meet at Police Field, are now starting to look nervously over their shoulders after a recent dip in form by both teams. Colts flirted with the top spot a few weeks ago but injuries have slowed up their progress in their first season back in the top flight.
Town are still in the driver’s seat with a six-point lead at the top. Village return to St John’s Field on Sunday looking to avenge their FA Cup loss there just a few days ago. Village are nine points behind the leaders and another loss for them would all but end their hopes of a first league title since 2010-11.
Robin Hood and PHC are also hoping for a Village victory, which would enable the winners at Goose Gosling Field to close the gap on the leaders.
In the First Division, St George’s head to Devonshire Recreation Club tonight to play Wolves as they try to get their promotion push back on track after a recent loss to Onions, which dropped them to fourth.
Onions, the joint leaders, play Ireland Island Rangers at home tomorrow night at 9pm.
Somerset Eagles play Paget Lions at Southampton Oval on Sunday while St David’s face Young Men’s Social Club for the second straight weekend after their defeat in the FA Cup last Sunday.
BAA play X-Roads at home in Sunday’s other match.
