Tucker’s Point will host between 50 and 60 youngsters during this weekend’s Developmental Tennis Tournament.

Round robin matches for three different age groups will start at 9am today for players eight and under, who will battle for places in the final at 12.30pm, while the 12 and under players will be on the court from 1.30pm to 6pm, with their final scheduled for 5pm.

Tomorrow the ten and under players will play matches from 9am with the final scheduled for 1.30pm.

“We have about 50 children which is a very large showing for a junior tournament in Bermuda,” said Gavin Manders, the Tucker’s Point Club professional, who will be running the tournament with assistant Javon Whitter. “There will be a lot of matches, round robin which will move into single elimination. We will be giving the divisions names instead of consolation and losers bracket.

“Javon and I have put in a lot of work getting the courts ready and have contacted other coaches to let them know. The plan is to bring all the kids out in a fun environment and teach them the game of tennis. We want them to come out so that we can grow the sport of tennis in Bermuda.”

The organisers will schedule matches around any inclement weather this weekend.

“We’re going to have to play it by ear, we may have to delay some matches or shorten some formats,” Manders said. “Whatever it takes to get it in, we’re going to get it in, unless it rains all day every day, obviously.

“We also have Sunday afternoon to push some of the matches into if we really have to.”
