Baseball bat murder: mother tells of grief

Indescribable loss: Chandra Mungal with Shijuan

A mother’s grief was laid bare yesterday as the victim impact statement of Chandra Mungal was read out in Supreme Court as her son’s killer was jailed for life.

Chandra Mungal’s heartbreaking statement revealed the devastating effects that son Shijuan’s death had had on her life.

She said: “No words in language that can express the tragic loss we have suffered. My everything is gone.

“There are no more happy smiles and no more bonding with my only children.

“My morning hugs and farewells from my only son have vanished.

“When I think of his next birthday the sensitivity is indescribable. I feel like I am a blank soul.

“He was in excruciating pain, but I never thought he would lose his life in such a senseless act. Reliving everything during the trial was horrific.

Ms Mungal gave evidence during the trial of Kiahna Trott-Edwards and described how she had rushed him to hospital in the aftermath of the ultimately fatal attack.

She added: “I have not been able to focus at work and have received heaps of counselling. My doctor has diagnosed me with depression.

“My loss is indescribable. I have a broken soul that is beyond repair. My life will never be the same again.”
