yesterday morning as a result of a four-vehicle accident involving two Police cadets.

The accident, which occurred shortly after 7 a.m. on Middle Road in Southampton -- near to Mr. Dickie Greene's guesthouse -- sent a 50-year-old Warwick man to the King Edward VII Memorial Hospital with head and facial injuries.

A 19-year-old Sandys Parish woman suffered a broken leg and wrist in the accident.

Police reported that around 7.25 a.m., two motorcycles and a car were traveling in an easterly direction along Middle Road, Southampton near the junction of High Time Drive.

Mr. Alvin Darrell was driving his car in the opposite direction when he was in collision with the front of the eastbound car driven by 30-year-old Sandys resident Ms Tracey Peniston.

Police cadet Miss Derika Bean was traveling on one of the motorcycles behind Ms Peniston's car and collided with its rear.

The 20-year-old rider of the other motorcycle, Police Cadet Miss Marlo Smith also collided with the rear of Ms Peniston's car.

Ms Peniston and Miss Smith were treated for cuts and abrasions at the hospital and were later released.

Both Mr. Darrell and Miss Bean had surgery yesterday and were listed in satisfactory condition last night.

Mr. Errolyn Bean, of SKB Coatings Ltd., which is close to the accident site, later told The Royal Gazette traffic coming out of Somerset must of been backed up all the way to Fort Scaur at one point after the accident.

Mr. Bean said it took him an hour to drive the short distance from Maxi Mart to SKB.

The accident came a day after Deputy Police Commissioner Mr. Michael Mylod told The Royal Gazette the Police Service was "deeply concerned'' by Bermuda's accident rate.

Investigating officer P.c. Joseph MacRonald said he would like to speak to any witnesses to the accident, events leading up to it, or events immediately following it.

Accident victim Peggy Lynn Binns remains in critical condition at the King Edward VII Memorial Hospital following a collision on Harrington Sound Road last Thursday. The 35-year-old woman worked as a waitress at the Pink Beach Club.
