Free Food Bermuda appeals for sponsors

The founder of a food-giving community initiative has called for sponsors to join its festive drive.

For the second year, Free Food Bermuda will be handing out hampers to deserving families as part of its ‘Twelve Days of Christmas’ celebration.

The hampers, which can feed up to 10 people, include a ham or turkey, a Christmas tree and gifts, and will be distributed on the morning of December 21 at Cobbs Hill Methodist Church.

“Christmas is a time to give, and when you do there’s a feeling that comes over you that you can’t explain,” said Nesi Armstrong, who founded Free Food Bermuda in 2014.

The initiative, which operates primarily via its 1,000-member Facebook group, connects those in need of assistance with those willing to help. This can include links to sales, free events, church meals and individuals looking to reach out to one another.

Last year’s inaugural ‘Twelve Days of Christmas’ set out to help 12 families. However, Ms Armstrong was floored by the generosity of the public’s response.

“We ended up accommodating 30 families,” she said. “I cried the whole of December. It was so overwhelming.”

She is hoping for a similar success story for 2015, but is appealing for more people to offer their help.

“Anyone who does give, I invite them to come and meet the family that they’re sponsoring,” said the Southampton resident.

“And when they see how thankful these people are, it inspires them to give again.”
