Lopes has big plans after six wins

Lopes and Cherokee's Ironman have been a formidable force

Tyler Lopes and Cherokee’s Ironman have proven to be an unstoppable force in harness racing this season.

Lopes has won an impressive six races on the trot competing with Arnold Manders’s gelding at the Bermuda Equestrian Centre.

“I don’t think I’ve ever come close to winning six races in a row with one horse,” Lopes said.

“This is by far a personal best for me and I actually didn’t think about it until it happened last weekend. I was like ‘oh wow’, we have just won six races in a row which is a fantastic feeling. It feels great.”

Lopes and Cherokee’s Ironman seem to have good chemistry on the racetrack.

“I like him and I would like to say he likes me,” Lopes added. “He’s a great horse to drive and gives you 100 per cent every time.

“He’s been impressive and I think he’s fit enough to start pushing him a little bit to see what we can get out of him.”

Although he has yet to be beaten this season, Lopes refuses to take all of the credit for the impressive win streak.

“I have to give most of the credit to his owner, Mr Arnold Manders, who has been doing an excellent job training him,” he said. “I give most of the credit to the pony and his trainer.”

The 20-year-old driver and grandson of seasoned driver David Lopes has big plans in store for Cherokee’s Ironman should he be allowed to continue racing Manders’s pony for the remainder of the season.

“If the owner keeps me as the driver, the goal is to hopefully get [Cherokee’s Ironman] up to the Free for All [1:04/4 and faster] and be able to be competitive in the Boxing Day and New Year’s Stakes and Champion of Champions,” Lopes said. “He’s definitely showing signs that he can get up there and compete with the big boys.

“I’d really like to keep driving him for the rest of the year but I’m just the driver. If his owner wants me to keep racing him, then I will.”

The previous race day at Vesey Street proved to be highly entertaining with GV Crystal Ball achieving the season’s fastest time.

With female driver Andrea Westerfield in the sulky, Edward Roque’s 13-year-old stallion posted a blistering 1:04/3 competing in the Aged Ponies division of the Best-of-Three Series to lower the bar.

It is the second time this season that GV Crystal Ball has posted the fastest time at the Vesey Street racetrack.

Going into the event, geldings, Brona’s Mike, and Cherokee’s Ironman, held a share of the season’s track record which previously stood at 1:05 flat.

Shady’s Liberty, Reel Patrol, Custard the Dragon, IC’s Overextended, Double Time and Royal Caribbean moved up a time bar last weekend.

The next harness race day is tomorrow. The post time is at 7pm.
