Marking its 43rd year, the second-oldest road race in Bermuda returns on Sunday.

First held in March 1972, the race is today known as the BNAA/Hannover Re half-marathon and 10K.

The only road race in Bermuda with a longer history is the Appleby Bermuda Half-Marathon Derby, which dates back to 1909.

Last year’s half-marathon was won by Maritz Theron in 1hr 26min 46sec, while the fastest woman was Rachel McGinnis in 1:27:50, taking second place overall.

The 10K was won by Seamus Fearon in 36:00, with Laura Cerge first woman in 41:43.

Sunday’s race, which has been held on a variety of routes during the past four decades, will start and finish outside the Botanical Gardens’ south gate. Competitors will do a two-mile loop towards Hamilton, turning around near BUEI on East Broadway, before running back past the Botanical Gardens and east along South Road. Half-marathon athletes will go as far as a turnaround point on Paynter’s Road before retracing their steps to the finish.

The 10K race will have a turnaround point near the top of McGall’s Hill on South Road.

Both races will start at 8am. Entries can be made online until 5pm today at racedayworld.com.
